The life well lived....
Today, I witnessed 2 cars broken down just next to each other near my house this morning.
It's raining season over here in Lagos and there are high expectations for car owners, due to the bad roads, to get their cars stuck or faulty.
These men kept trying to pull themselves out of the mud but it proved to be very difficult. I decided to go over to the "crime scene" and be of assistance to the victims of the great Naija roads.
There were about 6 people I found attempting to pull/push the cars out of the muddy potholes (honestly, they looked more like ponds π).
For about 30 minutes, we were either packing stones or pouring sands in order to easily push the car out but to no avail.
Truly, we were all disappointed. A pickup truck was later called to pull out the car.
However, I was a little confused when 4 of the men started saying, "Mo ti lo" (I've started going in English). They all began to disembark to their various destinations.
Initially, I thought the men were with the owners of the cars due to their eagerness and effort to get the vehicles moving again but it turns out they were just passers-by who came to help.
Wow!
These men actually took over 1hr of their precious time (also got really stained in the process) just to help out 2 people whom they've never met before.
Wow!
Today's experience really got me thinking about how better the world would be if everyone were like these 4 men. How beautiful would the world be if people loved other people just as much as they love themselves.
These men didn't get any tangible reward for their labour but were satisfied with the fact that a person got out of a huge problem due to their selfless action.
Dear friend, nothing is more Godly than charity and selflessness. The New testament reveals to us that love is the greatest and God Himself is love.
When we look at the life of Jesus, we see a life lived for the well-being of others. As Believers, we exemplify this very attribute (Thank God for the Holy Spirit in us). It is the right way to live.
A life well lived is the life that's lived for the upliftment of others. True satisfaction begins the moment a person smiles because of you.
